Comparing and contrasting traditional and online education

Online Education Master Degree

Online classes are advancing to grow in reputation and effectiveness with greater use of Internet resources. Online courses provide the opportunity for students to learn at their own pace, complete assignments at preferred schedules, and acquire same knowledge as in the case of the traditional classroom course. Online education system uses concepts such as discussions, assignments, and community to educate students. Although the resources are similar, the methods of execution are quite different.

Time management

Both traditional and online education programs require students to manage the time efficiently and wisely. In the traditional education system, students carry out schedules outside of the classroom to accommodate time for studying, homework and completing assignments. For an online institution, there is an absence of regular class meetings, giving the opportunity for students to learn and acquire course materials on their own. The freedom provided by the online platform is what makes it attractive in comparison to the traditional education system. It is beneficial for students or for individuals who possesses additional jobs or have family responsibilities, which make it impossible for attending regular classes.

Participation

Both traditional education and online education assess a student's performance based on his or her participation. In a conventional classroom, it is natural for students to participate voluntarily in discussions or answer questions. However, it is important for online students to take an active part in online discussions via e-mails or using the message boards. It is beneficial for students who are shy or unwilling to contribute. Furthermore, active participation will also provide the opportunity for students to hear a wider perspective of opinions and thoughts on a particular subject/topic.

Teacher-student relationship

The traditional classroom course offers an active relationship in the form of face-to-face communication between the teacher and the student. It creates a dynamic effect in the class, as it captures the attention of the students. Online education programs lack the face-to-face communication but use forums, online discussion media, and chat rooms to build community and interaction. While the traditional classrooms allow students to gain a personal relationship with the teacher, the online courses provide electronic relationship.

Tests and assignments

It is possible for an instructor in a traditional classroom to offer any assessment right from the written work to presentations. On the contrary, the online education platform has limited resources. Online instructors usually grade students by calculating the student contribution to online discussions, through papers, and through open book examinations. Additionally, assignments and tests in the online education platform are more practical in nature than the traditional classroom. It is because online students require self-direction and motivation to continue learning and complete the course within the prescribed period.

It is quite possible to compare and contrast the traditional classroom with that of the online education system. However, it is important to consider the situation of the student before evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of the online education system. A successful learning management system will prove beneficial in imparting the needed skills and knowledge to prepare the students for the real world.
